Meet Blessing Gapa

THIS IS

OUR STORY

Born in 1985 within the rural confines of Gutu, Zimbabwe, Blessing was raised in a farming community where his affinity for wood carving took root. Early on, Blessing found himself fashioning practical items like cattle yokes, ploughs, cooking sticks, and even mouse traps using little more than an axe.

In 2004, Blessing recognized the opportunity to enhance his skills and enrolled in a three-year Woodcarving Course at Driefontein Mission in Masvingo. Through dedicated learning and persistent practice, he refined my abilities, gradually shaping a path to a promising future.
Embarking on a journey fueled by determination, Blessing took on the role of a seasonal apple picker in Grabouw, just beyond the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. The sweat and labour of those days were dedicated to a singular purpose: acquiring the tools that would breathe life into his wood carving aspirations.

By the year 2010, the culmination of Blessings dreams bore fruit, giving birth to Hohodza Woodcarving. A humble enterprise founded on a steadfast commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability.
At the heart of Hohodza's ethos lies the art of resourcefulness. The timber that forms the canvas for each creation is sourced from recycled fallen trees or those deemed necessary to be felled. Often, these trees are exotic to South Africa—Jacaranda, Camphor, and bloodwood trees—imbuing each piece with a touch of the world's diversity.

While a chainsaw is the sole power tool employed, its role is modest, limited to shaping the raw logs into desired dimensions. The true magic unfolds in the meticulous craftsmanship guided by human hands, wielding up to 30 distinct chisel tools. This painstaking process ensures that each creation possesses a distinct identity, a character born from the intertwining of creativity and dedication. The wood is patiently dried, a precautionary measure taken to thwart the emergence of unsightly cracks that might mar the final form.

Our Pieces

Bespoke figures, each a unique embodiment of imagination, are not merely carved; they're conceived, sketched, and then meticulously brought to life. A process that culminates with staining and treating, tailored to fulfil the desires of every client.
Hohodza Woodcarving has found its way into the lives of a diverse array of patrons. From renowned names like Egg Designs, Noush Products, and Art Eye Gallery, to global entities like Kaufland Germany and cherished individual customers spanning the continents, each piece finds a home, cherished for its tale of artistry and dedication.
